Exhibition Space

Annie Cheung from Will's 3D class has found a [potential?] venue for our final exhibition. She has gotten in touch with UTSC Alumni John Loerchner and Laura Mendes for their gallery space.

What we need to do now
is to decide whether we want to use this space :)

Hence, read the following info + respond

Here's a link to the space's website:
www.labspacestudio.com

This is what John wrote (regarding availabilities and pricing(:
"At this point Thursday through Saturday in the first week of April is available. However, we have a regular renter every Sunday until April 13th. She has a group of kids in all day and I am pretty sure that this would conflict with your proposed gallery dates.
I might suggest having the opening on a thursday and striking everything on Saturday night (sunday is usually really slow around the building anyways). Regarding a/v equipment we generally charge extra rental for whatever components are requested. The stereo system I would throw in for free if needed and the projector I could rent for an additional $20/day (compare that to UTSC prices :-). As far as setup I imagine in the Alumni spirit Laura and/or I would be able to help oversee the installation.
Presumably you would ned to come in the day prior (wednesday) in order to setup. I think a fair breakdown would be something along the lines of:
Wed - 4 hours in evening
Thur - 4 hours in evening
Fri - 4 hours in evening
Sat - 8 hours full day
--------------------------------
$300 - 20hrs total @ $15/hr
$80 - 4 days projector
-------------------------------
$380 - Total

With a regular renter we would probably charge them about 10 hours a day to monopolize the studio so this is about a 50% discount."

Tanya suggests the following schedule:
Couple weeks prior: suss-out space and decide (generally) where works will go
Wed Eve. -- get stuff there
Thursday _-- plan on ALL DAY (it will take all day to hang 16 pieces) (I am available on the Thursday, others may not be)
Friday -- finish hanging in the day, opening in the evening
Saturday Open in the day, strike at night.

Annie (Cheung) has found some information about the venue itself:
-Entire facility (1200 feet2)
-Main performance space (28 x 30)
-Kitchen area with bar
-Washroom
-13’ ceilings
-Tables and chairs
-Large windows
-Floating floors
-projector, and other a/v, on request

basic:
-there's one main performance space (840 sq. ft.)
-an upstairs (half enclosed) loft area (approx. 150 sq. ft.)
-john's computer and A/V suite is upstairs also, separated by a door
-very good amount of clean white wall space with high ceilings for 2-D or projection/installation (at least 4 separate large areas of wall)
-2 medium sized walls in the upstairs area (approx. 7 ft ceilings)
-1 large wall facing Carlaw in the main area is 75% windows
-john's workshop downstairs is enclosed and has been used for storage or as a greenroom
-an area (approx. 20 sq. ft.) on top of the washroom that can be used for storage, display or a limited performance (access by a short wall ladder)

you can see the gallery within the first minute of thw following video:

there isn't a lot of space for all 20-something of us, but Will said he and Tanya can curate.

Cheerios,

Annie-Bananie
